SIERAAD Art Fair 2010 shows ‘True Colours’
Jewellery of today gets its inspiration from afar but stays close to home.

This year the theme of SIERAAD Art Fair as well as of the New Traditional Jewellery design contest was TRUE COLOURS. A brilliant concept, for it calls for new artistic exploration on the part of designers and a search for their own creative roots.

In the meantime 200 jewellery artists have shown their work at SIERAAD, which is the largest number of participants since the beginning of the fair. From November 4 through 7 they have shown the wide range of their creativity to the public in the Gasholder on the Westergasterrein in Amsterdam. The fair included the 50 best entries for the international design contest New Traditional Jewellery.

International platform

The 9th edition of this unique art fair brought together another colourful, international gathering. About half of the participants is from the Netherlands, there will be a large delegation from Germany and England, but designers also come from o.a. Israel, Japan , Switseland, France and Spain. The number of young beginners has more than doubled compared to last year. They get an opportunity to participate in SIERAAD with a so-called “chair”, a small eye-catching exhibition space, which keeps their expenses within limits. Once again we have been successful in getting two colleges to come to Amsterdam with their unique presentations: the Fachhochschule from Idar Oberstein and Saimaan AMK, Saimaan University of Applied Sciences, Fine Arts, Jewellery, Finland, will present their most talented students

The number of visitors has increased every year and will this year reach an estimated 7 to 8000. SIERAAD visitors come from all over the country and jump at the chance of seeing something unique and getting hold of something that is not for sale anywhere else. The fact that they meet the artists in person also plays an important role in their joy of buying. In 2009 25% of the visitors to SIERAAD came from abroad.

Trends in jewellery

At SIERAAD Art Fair you will find no commercial trends. It can safely be said that he jewellery and accessories presented at the fair are unique pieces, not for sale in regular retail stores. The art of jewellery does not get carried away by fashion fads and trendy waves. It is striking, however, that the entries for the fair as well as for the design contest clearly reflect the theme TRUE COLOURS, and thus show much authenticity and colour. The designers who, at the end of July, will compete for ‘New Traditional Jewellery’ found their inspiration in the cultures of India and middle/north Africa, something that can also be seen in the fashion of 2011.

Do fashion design and jewellery art tap into the same sources?
If so, then by the end of 2010, beginning of 2011, this will be translated into jewellery with an honest, genuine and basic feeling. We see little contrived gaudery - this form of art is clear and accessible. In this way you remain close to yourself and show who you are. This goes for designers, jewellery and wearers.
