The fragile skeleton of a cactus

The fragile skeleton of a cactus

Sophie van Dooren is a young jewellery artist. She deals with the theme of fragility. It involves the uncertainties of our times, such as the pressure humanity puts on nature. In 2021, she experienced the floods in her home region of Limburg, the Netherlands.
She was made aware of our fragility. A fascination arose for delicate insects and brittle plant materials. She ended up with prickly pear skeleton, that which remains after the watery flesh has disappeared.

Prickly pear skeleton is fragile. Sophie van Dooren has partly gilded it, or cast off in silver. Even though the cactus is mounted in a solid structure, the material remains vulnerable. The wearer must adjust and becomes extra aware of the fragility.
