Ceramic jewellery

Ceramic jewellery brings a pleasant kind of tension with it. The pieces seem to ask you to be careful. Until you notice how solid they are. These Romanian and Dutch artists show – in very different ways – how suitable ceramics are for jewellery.

Diana Cojocaru is a real painter. Flowers, the cosmos, sea creatures and precious stones appear on petals of porcelain with gold lustre. The stones are interesting when you consider that porcelain clay also consists of stone, which over the years has disintegrated into miniscule pieces. Maria Paltin builds spatial necklaces out of perfectly made elements. Plants, especially the strelitzia, are her great inspiration.

Judith Bloedjes’ work is recognisable from afar: smooth, round forms in white porcelain that radiate calm. Another Judith who works with porcelain, Judith Kayser, lets the material do something completely different. Judith Kayser knows that the glaze can’t be controlled completely. There is a lot of colour, always with different effects. And the gold beads? Also made of ceramic!

Sieraden van keramiek brengen een aangenaam soort spanning met zich mee. Ze lijken je te vragen voorzichtig te doen. Tot je merkt hoe stevig ze zijn. Deze Roemeense en Nederlandse kunstenaars laten – op heel verschillende wijze – zien hoe geschikt keramiek is voor sieraden.

Diana Cojocaru is een echte schilder. Op bloemblaadjes van porselein met goudluster verschijnen bloemen, de kosmos, zeedieren en edelstenen. Die laatste zijn interessant als je bedenkt dat porseleinklei ook bestaat uit steen, die door de jaren heen in minuscule stukjes uiteen is gevallen. Maria Paltin bouwt ruimtelijke halssieraden uit perfect gemaakte elementjes. Planten, en vooral de paradijsvogelbloem, zijn haar grote inspiratie.

Judith Bloedjes’ werk herken je uit duizenden: strakke ronde vormen in wit porselein die rust uitstralen. Een andere Judith die met porselein werkt, Judith Kayser, laat het materiaal heel iets anders doen. Judith Kayser weet dat glazuur zich niet altijd laat commanderen. Er is veel kleur te zien, steeds weer met andere effecten.  En de gouden kralen? Ook van keramiek!
